Sir,
Referring to my Despatch No. 167 of the 13th.
May, 1913, reporting the retirement on pension of Mr. R. H. A. Craig, Assistant Superintendent, Victoria Gaol, I have the honour
to request that steps may be taken to select a successor, from a
Convict Prison in England, a thoroughly qualified Discipline Officer
who has experience in teaching industrial work in a Prison. Mr.—
Craig was of that stamp and it is a man of the same qualifications
that is desired.
Mr. Craig himself will be in England shortly and he would be prepared to assist in the selection of a candidate.
He knows exactly the kind of man that is wanted.
2.
I enclose the usual paper of particulars of
office, together with 2 loose copies of the Prison Regulations in
which are detailed the duties of the Assistant Superintendent.
3.
Pending the appointment of an officer to succeed
Mr. Craig I have appointed Captain F. C. C. Rogers, M.V.0., 2nd.
Battalion, Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry, to act as Assistant
Superintendent of the Gaol, in addition to performing his Military
duties.
There was no officer available in the Civil
Service to fill the vacancy except the Deputy Superintendent of Police who might have combined the duties with those of his
substantive office. Mr. Wodehouse, however, asked in June last
when
